LA CENTRALE VICENZA

WHAT IS A HACKATHON?

It’s a collaborative innovation lab

An intensive, inclusive event where diverse, interdisciplinary teams work together to develop ideas, prototypes and practical solutions to complex problems.

Rooted in programming, the hackathon format now brings together a much broader range of expertise: technology, design, communication, research, business, culture and social innovation.

Within a short, focused timeframe, participants share knowledge and perspectives, explore a challenge and develop a proposal that can be presented and tested. The value lies not only in the final outcome, but also in the exchange of ideas across different disciplines and the ability to turn a complex problem into a clear path towards a practical solution.

THE HACKATHON

TechWarriors is a collaborative competition dedicated to developing solutions to tackle gender-based violence.

During the event, participants with diverse skills and experience will work side by side, guided by mentors and experts, to analyse the challenges, develop an idea and turn it into a concrete proposal.

We’re not looking for theoretical exercises or technology for its own sake.

We’re looking for projects that are easy to understand, responsibly designed and feasible, with the potential to make a positive difference to people’s lives and communities.

9 Categories to Design Change

These categories represent the thematic areas in which TechWarriors design challenges will be framed. They connect the fight against gender-based violence with technical skills, situational awareness, and the ability to drive tangible impact.

Each category can generate various applications, services, analytical tools, educational pathways, communication frameworks, and organizational models. However, all proposals must keep human needs, accessibility, inclusion, and the responsible use of technology at their core.

This category encompasses all aspects of the digital realm that can perpetuate gender discrimination, amplify stereotypes, or escalate into cyber and digital violence.

The goal is to identify innovative technologies and trends capable of supporting the prevention and fight against violence: from generative artificial intelligence and machine learning to decentralized digital tools designed to minimize bias exposure.

An additional focus area involves data collection, interpretation, and visualization. What insights can raise awareness about this issue? How can this data be represented and communicated to uncover hidden dynamics and deliver impactful messages?

This category explores “broader forms of expression” across their various forms and representations: from ironic self-defense to music culture, from reinterpreting song lyrics to artistic and performative expressions.

These forms of expression can sharpen individual and collective awareness of gender-based violence, helping to deconstruct it and make it easier to recognize. They can also offer a sensitive vocabulary and new avenues of expression to name, address, and counter the phenomenon.

Special attention should be paid to social media: spaces where violent language and bias often take root, but also powerful amplifiers capable of spreading new narratives and respectful communication models.

Schools, starting from primary level, and universities are essential environments for building awareness, preventing gender-based violence, and deconstructing biases.

Initiatives can promote education on gender equity, introduce students to non-stereotypical professional role models, and build skills for the conscious use of social media—helping them distinguish appropriate behavior and comments from discriminatory or violent ones.

This category also encompasses psychological well-being, understood both as personal growth and development and as counseling, active listening, and self-empowerment. Engaging with universities, educators, listening centers, and dedicated support services can help build more effective programs that resonate with young people.

Limited familiarity with financial and legal tools can restrict women’s autonomy and decision-making power, rather than serving as a lever for empowerment and independence.

This category invites the design of pathways, services, and tools capable of making knowledge about financial management, legal rights, funding access, crowdfunding platforms, and financial support opportunities more accessible.

The goal is to strengthen the ability to understand and leverage these resources, helping to prevent forms of economic dependency and abuse while increasing control over one’s present and future.

This category addresses gender-based violence and disparities within organizations and the workplace.

It can start by gathering testimonies and insights from the corporate world, engaging companies, associations, consultants, and HR and organizational design professionals.

The goal is to better understand how this phenomenon manifests in professional settings and to transform lived experiences, data, and awareness into actionable tools for prevention, recognition, and organizational change.

This category focuses on female leadership—not only in corporate settings but also within broader society—and the support of women-led entrepreneurship.

Proposals can promote knowledge sharing, self-empowerment, and the creation of practical resources, including a digital toolkit to strengthen women’s capacity to lead projects, businesses, and communities.

This reflection stems from a few core questions: What does it mean to practice feminist leadership? Where does it originate, and how can it be cultivated? The reference point is the concept of equity—moving beyond the implicit expectation that a woman must act “like a man” to be viewed as competent or suited for a leadership role.

Spatial planning and urban safety represent another critical space for taking concrete action to counter gender-based violence.

This category invites the development of tools and solutions that help analyze and manage urban environments, with a dedicated focus on safety and combating gender-based violence.

This category covers equitable, informed, and non-judgmental access to healthcare, with a particular focus on sexual and reproductive health, gender-specific medicine, and prevention.

Proposals can help reduce information barriers and guide individuals through healthcare services and professionals, addressing topics such as the menstrual cycle, contraception, fertility, pregnancy, postpartum care, menopause, sexual wellness, pain, sexuality, and identity.

Digital technologies, data, and artificial intelligence can be leveraged to streamline triage, navigation, and matching with qualified professionals. However, every solution must strictly ensure privacy, security, inclusivity, scientific reliability, and freedom of choice.

Work–life balance and the equitable distribution of household and family responsibilities are essential conditions for achieving gender equality both inside and outside the workplace.

This category invites the development of solutions that recognize the burden of caregiving and help distribute responsibilities and time more fairly.

This balance can also be supported through dedicated services for family management, childcare, and support for those caring for elderly or dependent individuals.

We are surrounded by an ocean of underlying dynamics and conditions that often go unnoticed, yet allow gender-based violence to proliferate in all its forms—a violence still all too often perceived as a private issue rather than a systemic social phenomenon. TechWarriors was created to harness technology as a lever for awareness and meaningful change.

BRING TO LIGHT

Make hidden power dynamics visible — the ones that fuel violence and inequality.

BUILD AWARENESS

Foster a broader understanding of the dynamics that drive and sustain the phenomenon.

DECONSTRUCT VIOLENCE

Identify digital tools that can help recognise, address and challenge different forms of violence.

INTERSECTIONALITY LOOKING AT THE ISSUE FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES

Gender-based violence is not an isolated phenomenon.

To understand and address it effectively, we also need to look at the overlap between different social identities, their connections and interdependencies, and the forms of discrimination that may result from them.

Taking an intersectional approach means recognising that gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, culture, religion and other personal and social factors can intersect, creating different experiences of exclusion, vulnerability or access to opportunities.

How does this approach translate into practice?

Diverse voices

Promote the presence of women and men in conversations, panels and discussion groups, avoiding situations where a single point of view is treated as representative of everyone’s experience.

Engaging different communities

Involve anti-violence centres and local organisations that are attentive to multiple forms of discrimination, including those affecting LGBTQIA+ communities.

Accessibility for everyone

Take into account bias related to disability, affecting women and other people, and design solutions that are accessible to people with different needs.

Diaologues across cultures and faiths

Challenge prejudices and assumptions about different cultures and religious beliefs, avoiding stereotypical interpretations of how they view and represent women.

TECH FOR PEOPLEResponsible Innovation

When working on a sensitive issue like gender-based violence, a good idea is not enough.

Solutions need to take into account people’s safety, data protection, accessibility, inclusion, and the possible unintended consequences of technology.

Teams will be encouraged to think not only about what a solution can do, but also about how it should be used, who it is designed for, and under which conditions.
